Causes and Treatments of Thinning Hair

Generally for men as well as women, the process of hair thinning starts with ageing. Otherwise there are various causes for hair loss. Family history of baldness can cause thinning of hair. Hereditary disorders of hair shaft can also cause hair thinning. Fungal infections like infection by Tinea capitis, frequent use of hot combs or chemical to clean hair, overuse of hair care products, burns, compulsive pulling of hair like trochotillomania, iron deficiency, burns, physical and psychological stressful situations and exposure of hair to traction for longer time cause thinning if hair. In males being male itself is a risk factor for hair thinning.
Repeated combing, over use of hair care products, dyeing of hair, ironing and tight hair styles can also cause hair thinning.
Hair loss may be due to certain diseases or medical conditions like typhoid fever, Alopecia areata, Alopecia mucinosa, dissecting cellulites, diabetes, testosterone booster tablets, tufted folliculitis, chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, lichenplanepilaris, hair loss secondary to syphilis, keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans, discoid lupus erythematosus, pseudopelade of Brocq, tumor of adrenal gland, radiation therapy and medications for arthritis, gout, cancer, depression,, high blood pressure and heart diseases.
Nutritional deficiencies, lice, dandruff, stress, acidity and excess smoking and alcohol can cause hair loss.
Generally they grow again few months after the disease or condition gets cured or medications get over.
Hair thinning can be treated by intake of iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin rich diet. Diet should contain sprouts, eggs, sea foods, tofu, low fat milk, low fat cheese, beans and green leafy vegetables. Taking adequate and timely sleep, exercise, drinking plenty of water and learning stress relaxation techniques help in preventing thinning of hair. Massaging the scalp with herbal oils like jojoba oil, wheat germ oil, coconut oil with lemon juice, carrot juice, coriander juice, spinach juice help in preventing thinning of hair. Various combinations of pastes can be applied to scalp before hair wash consisting of fenugreek powder, henna, eggs, Aloe Vera, yogurt and Embolica officinalis (Amla). Less use of hair care products and if at all to be used then herbal hair care products should be preferred. Hair can be washed with home made herbal preparations instead of commercially available shampoos like water extract of peach leaves, sage, rosemary, nettle and burdock can be used to wash hair. A mixture of coconut milk, Aloe Vera and wheat germ oil can be used to wash hair daily to prevent hair loss. In general natural hair care helps in preventing hair loss.
